MY STORY: HORMONAL ACNE & POLYCYSTIC OVARY (PCOS) // WHY AM I BREAKING OUT BADLY?

There are a lot, i mean A LOT of people are shocked and tend to ask me " why are you breaking out so badly?" and I tend to say " PMS". I know that is not the main factor in my case but to cut things short because i know that there are a lot of women are not familiar with my condition regardless how long and tired i will be after explaining about PCOS or Polycystic Ovary. It is not a bad condition and in fact, it is a pretty common ones among the women in the world.

Before we start, take a hot glass of tea or any drinks of your favorites because this is going to be a long one and a hot session of heart to heart sharing pouring post from me to you, hoping i can help some of you out there away from the state of confused, sadness and desperate. I know how it feels!

I guess I should start to explain what is PCOS?
Basically, PCOS is a hormonal condition in a person's body. It is a hormonal imbalance. Imagine your hormones goes crazy in your body like a roller coaster, ok not that extreme but yes imbalance hormones. One hormone changed will triggered another hormone to change, so it is like a domino effect in the hormonal department.
Based on my understanding, because i was a biology student, women's hormones are majority estrogen and there are a tiny amount of androgens (male hormone) in our system. With PCOS, the male hormones are produced slightly over the amount they are supposed to produce which caused to more hair growth on your body, acne (this is me) and stop ovulating.

Is it genetics?
I have no idea how to check this with my family because they are not familiar so i dont want to waste my time finding out and arguing haha but based on the research, 90% are genetics.

How did I find out about PCOS?
This, i gotta be proud at myself, i am a very paranoid person, if something is wrong or if i am starting to feel unwell, i will seek a specialist immediately! My menstruation was never regular, they were back then what i was skinny and hawt but it didnt last long *hey i love food alright?* So, my period skipped for 3 months! Imagine my horror! Of course, i seek 2 OBGYN. I was back in Malaysia, alone where no one understood what is going on, i had to find the specialist by myself and went by myself and try to understand this by myself. Basically the OBGYN thought i was pregnant then she ran a blood test and the result came out with me having PCOS. I didnt believe her at first, so I decided to go and see another OBGYN which said the same thing, so yes, irregular period was the main reason i got myself check. I knew about this like 4-5 years ago and i accept it now. If I want to have babies, i probably have to work harder than anyone else HAHAHA

What are the symptoms?
Truthfully, the symptoms doesnt appear straight away. I appear gradually and slowly. Here is a screen shot taken from WebMd

For me, ACNE is the number one symptoms i realized, not just any normal acne but big bumpy red ones. Then I realized losing weight is rather hard or perhaps it is just me though haha. Then, the hair loss! oh my lawd! yes! thinning hair on the scalp and irregular periods obviously. As for hair, yes it is but it doesnt bother me that much because i can just wax them out!

The main symptoms i realized the most is the acne break outs and the thinning hair on my scalp.

Can it be cured?
Hmm, i dont think so but i think it can be help and prevent or it can be stabilized but probably will take sometimes.

What to do now?
Well, here is a question i tend to ask by myself, what now? what happen next? what should i do?
First, acceptance. Accept and understand that, this is genetics and i am born with this. Second, work with PCOS. I realized that there is no cure but the thing that i can do is to prevent and try my best to regulate the whole cycle of PCOS, PMS and Period by exercising regularly and losing weight *this doesnt seem to happen*

The actions that I tried and seems to work is to exercise regularly (3x a week) and try to lose weight.
I told you i was skinny and hawt back then right? that was the moments when my period came regularly and i can keep track. So these two ways of regulating worked!

Another way that i have tried is to take birth control pills. I took them before in form of patch and pills. Yes they regulate the period and i was so happy but i knew taking any form of medication is not the best way.

Aside from birth control pills, i also take Omega3 (FISH OIL) and Zinc as the supplement.

Then, of course with the hormonal acne break outs, i had to go to facial and get these acne clean by the acne injection. I dont like it at all but i have no other choice at the moment because i dont want to take Accutane. This medication has been promoted and given so easily in here and i know the side effects are bad.

What am i going to do next is to see a hormones specialist, an Endocrinology.

wahh.. feegy.. i just know about it now, but it's really great that you says acceptance is the right key. I'm having trouble too with my hormones since high school so it's really helpful reading this post as inspiration.

If I may ask...
What other treatment have you tried?
PCOS patients usually have thickened epithelial in their ovaries.. And there are two ways to treat thay.. It helps to boost the chance of ovulation..
There is not enough study about it but PCOS also related to diabetes type 2 in some cases..
And metformin can help boost the ovulation as well... Metformin regulate androgen, blood sugar and insulin.. Consult your GP for this..
For the alopesia ( thinning hair in the scalp..)
May I suggest aldactone? It is a spironolactone that can lower androgen..
Androgen is the reason why the hair keeps on falling..

And I know it feels bad and uneasy to depend on the birth control pills, patch, implans, or monthly injection..

But PCOS patients need it.. It is a must to help boost the estrogen and progesteron so the patients can have normal hormonal cycle...

I mean this not in a bad way..
But thank God someone is being so self-aware of their health...

In women..
Irregular cycle, abnormal amount of blood during period, abnormal pain, and dysfunctional uterine bleeding ( bleeding outside the cycle ) are warnings that something is not right...

Medical world is better now..
So..
Let's say it doesn't have to be that hard one day if you want to have offsprings..
But well..
Advance medicine is not cheap..

Good luck in life...
:)
